Natural evolution from macular retinoschisis to full-thickness macular hole in highly myopic eyes

Abstract: our longitudinal study revealed two patterns of FTMH formation in highly myopic eyes with MRS. This finding might be useful in further understanding the pathogenesis of macular hole formation in high myopia.

“…Previous research indicates that an average duration of 2 years is expected for the progression of LMH to FTMH in high myopic eyes. 15 In the present study, the average duration of LMH to FTMH in six cases was about 13 months, but the variation of duration regarding the progression from LMH to MH was quite large.…”

“…The medical data reviewed included colour fundus photography and OCT of 2365 highly myopic patients (age from 3 to 70 years). High myopia was defined as manifest refraction ≤−6 diopters and axial length ≥26 mm2122. Based on the diagnostic criteria of macular retinoschisis in highly myopic eyes reported before122, MRS was determined in 228 cases according to its typical appearance in OCT examination, of whom 9 cases (13 eyes) were under 20 years of age.…”

“…,35 Sun et al36 observed that two types of MH evolved after MF, based on whether an outer lamellar MH developed. In our study, no MF was found in most of the highly myopic eyes with MH, which indicates that most of the high-myopia MH may have the similar pathogenic mechanisms as idiopathic MH.…”
