Natural Compounds and PCL Nanofibers: A Novel Tool to Counteract Stem Cell Senescence

Abstract: Tissue homeostasis mainly depends on the activity of stem cells to replace damaged elements and restore tissue functions. Within this context, mesenchymal stem cells and fibroblasts are essential for maintaining tissue homeostasis in skin, in particular in the dermis. Modifications in collagen fibers are able to affect stem cell features. Skin properties can be significantly reduced after injuries or with aging, and stem cell niches, mainly comprising extracellular matrix (ECM), may be compromised. To this end… Show more

“…On the other hand, an essential condition that new approaches able to fight infections should bear is the ability to preserve the physiological health of the environment and cell types involved in repairing damaged tissues. In particular, stem cells have an important role in tissue regeneration [5]. In the present study, stem cells, fibroblast and human epithelial cells were analyzed.…”

“…In the 21st century, stem cells have been identified in the human vagina [4]. Stem cells are undifferentiated cellular elements that actively contribute to the tissue regeneration when properly stimulated [5]. This particular cell population is responsible for vagina regenerative capability [3].…”

“…Myrtle berries and leaves of cultivated selections showed higher market value, because of the predictable chemical composition, homogenous ripening stage, and absence of consequences of tissue stress (excessive dehydration, high level of tannins, and low content of anthocyanins). These characteristics strongly contribute to enhancing the quality of raw materials, particularly when the final destination of the industry process is the production of essential oil, nutraceutical food additives, or medicinal extracts like that increasingly obtained from the myrtle plant [19][20][21][22].…”

“…At the same context, using honey silk fibroin scaffold decreased the expression of MSC senescence markers p53, p21, and SA-β-gal [306]. Moreover, myrtle extract from Myrtus communis L. was reported to have antisenescence effects on stem cells of the skin and adipose tissue [307]. Furthermore, supplemented antioxidants are reported as cytoprotective agents for MSCs that may induce their therapeutic potency [273].…”
