Introduction: Sexual function greatly affects the quality of life. Any problem which affects satisfaction is considered sexual dysfunction. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate how recently used of complementary and alternative medicines has increased in treating infertility. Methods: Study has descriptive character based on searched and analyzed facts from the published articles in scientific journals. Results: The majority of the studies done for the detection of the efficacy of medicinal plants in treating male infertility were done on experimental animals with few clinical studies. However, there is still a need for more studies to have certain results, as conflicting results were noted in different studies done on the effect of the same medicinal plant on spermatogenesis. It might be referred it to the absence of standardization among research models, the difference in extracts, administration route, doses and how long did the experiment last added to differences in the part of the plant used and plant collection. This review summarized the finding of many studies that studied the effect of different medicinal herbs on the testes, epididymis, sperm and prostate parameters, testosterone level and steroidogenesis, erection/ejaculation function and libido. Conclusion: The protective effect might be due to OLE competence to antagonize the oxidative stress and LPO. Londium suffruticosum I. suffruticosum leaf extract was administered to sub-fertile male rats, subfertility was induced by carbendazim, it resulted in increased spermatogenesis, increased sperm counts, lessened sperm agglutination by preserving normal pH in testicular microenvironment, increasing the testicular oxidative biomarkers, SOD, and CAT. It was found that the main active components of the extract are alkaloids, steroidal lactones and flavonoids.

The use of traditional medicinal plants is generally based on empirical experience; therefore, a scientific approach is needed to bring traditional medicine into the practice of medicine and formal health services. Tristania sumatrana Miq. is one of the traditional medicinal plants that are often used as contraceptives for women in the villages of Lembah Bawan and Kampung Dalam (West Sumatra). The extract of Tristania sumatrana Miq. can extend the estrus cycle of Mus musculus into eleven days. The purpose of this research is to know the effect of Tristania sumatrana Miq. extract to the fertility of female mice. The experiments were conducted with a randomized 5x2 group design. Five dosage groups: untreated control, placebo, treatment with doses 600, 900 and 1200 mg/kgbw and two treatment groups: 10 and 20 days. The fertility parameters studied were ovarian weight, number of primary, secondary, tertiary follicles. The results prove the extract of Tristania sumatrana Miq. causing a very significant decrease in ovarian weight (treatment of 900 mg/kg bb for 10 days), number of primary and secondary follicles (1200 mg / kg bb for 10 days), and tertiary (600 mg / kg bb for 20 days). The extract of Tristania sumatrana Miq. causing a decline in Mus musculus fertility. Index Terms: Fertility, Mus musculus, Tristania sumatrana ABSTRAKPenggunaan tanaman obat tradisional pada umumnya berdasarkan pengalaman empiris, oleh sebab itu diperlukan pendekatan ilmiah guna membawa obat tradisional ke dalam praktik kedokteran dan pelayanan kesehatan formal. Tristania sumatrana Miq. Merupakan salah satu tanaman obat tradisional yang sering digunakan sebagai obat kontrasepsi untuk wanita di desa Lembah Bawan dan Kampung Dalam (Sumatera Barat). Ekstrak Tristania sumatrana Miq. dapat memperpanjang siklus estrus Mus musculus menjadi sebelas hari. Tujuan penelitian mengetahui pengaruh pencekokan ekstrak Tristania sumatrana Miq. terhadap fertilitas mencit betina. Eksperimen dilakukan dengan rancangan acak kelompok 5x2. Lima kelompok dosis: kontrol tanpa perlakuan, plasebo, perlakuan dengan dosis 600, 900 dan 1200 mg/kgbb dan dua kelompok lama perlakuan: 10 dan 20 hari. Parameter fertilitas yang diteliti adalah berat ovarium, jumlah folikel primer, sekunder, tersier. Hasil penelitian membuktikan pencekokan ekstrak Tristania sumatrana Miq. menyebabkan penurunan sangat bermakna berat ovarium (perlakuan 900 mg/kg bb selama 10 hari), jumlah folikel primer dan sekunder (1200 mg/kg bb selama 10 hari), serta tersier (600 mg/kg bb selama 20 hari). Pencekokan ekstrak Tristania sumatrana Miq. menyebabkan penurunan fertilitas Mus musculus.Index Terms: Fertilitas, Mus musculus dan Tristania sumatrana * Corresponding author.
