Three new bisabolocurcumin ethers, named demethoxybisabolocurcumin ether (1), bisabolocurcumin ether (2), and didemethoxybisabolocurcumin ether (3), along with two known compounds, 4 and 5, were isolated from the AcOEt extract of the rhizomes of Curcuma longa L. Their structures were established by the analysis of NMR and MS data. The new compounds 1 -3, which possess a new 1,7-diarylheptanoid skeleton linked with a bisabolone-type sesquiterpene substructure by a CÀO bond, were found for the first time in a natural source. , and hypoglycemic properties [10]. Up to now, from C. longa, curcuminoids, sesquiterpenoids, and their derivatives were reported as components [11]. In our phytochemical investigation, three new bisabolocurcumin ethers, compounds 1 -3, were isolated from the title plant. In their structures, a bisabolone-type sesquiterpene substructure is combined with a curcuminoid moiety, connected via a CÀO bond. Two known compounds, (1E,4E)-1,5-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)penta-1,4-dien-3-one (4) [12] and (1E,4E,6E)-1,7-bis(4-hydroxyphenyl)hepta-1,4,6-trien-3-one (5) [13], were also isolated.In this article, the isolation and structure determination of the three new compounds are described.

Objective:This prospective clinical trial was designed to evaluate the clinical effects of a commercially available powder (Periocare® Gum massage powder), containing various herbal medicaments, in the reduction of plaque and gingival inflammation in subjects diagnosed with gingivitis.Materials and Methods:Seventy-five subjects diagnosed with chronic generalized gingivitis were selected and randomly divided into the following three groups: Group I - Scaling + Periocare® Gum Massage powder, Group II - Periocare® Gum Massage powder alone, and Group III - Scaling only. Clinical evaluation was done at baseline, 2 weeks, 4 weeks, and 6 weeks using gingival index, plaque index, and microbiological culturing of plaque samples.Results:Periocare® Gum Massage (multi-herbal formulation) powder as an adjunct to mechanical therapy (scaling) showed significant clinical and microbiological improvement in the gingival index and plaque index scores as compared to other groups. Periocare® Gum Massage powder as a monotherapy did not prove to be effective for plaque control.Conclusion:Periocare® Gum Massage may be a useful herbal formulation for chemical plaque control and improvement in plaque scores and gingival status.

Background: Portugal has a strong tradition of conventional western healthcare. So it provides a natural case study for the relationship between Complementary/Alternative Medicine (CAM) and Western Medicine (WM). This work aims to test the relationship between CAM and WM users in the diagnosis and treatment stages and to estimate the determinants of CAM choice. Methods: The forth Portuguese National Health Survey is employed to estimate two single probit models and obtain the correlation between the consumption of CAM and WM medicines in the diagnosis and treatment stages. Results: Firstly, both in the diagnosis and the treatment stage, CAM and WM are seen to be complementary choices for individuals. Secondly, self-medication also shows complementarity with the choice of CAM treatment. Thirdly, education has a non-linear relationship with the choice of CAM. Finally, working status, age, smoking and chronic disease are determinant factors in the decision to use CAM. Conclusion:The results of this work are relevant to health policy-makers and for insurance companies. Patients need freedom of choice and, for the sake of safety and efficacy of treatment, WM and CAM healthcare ought to be provided in a joint and integrated health system.
