Natura Urbans, Natura Urbanata: Ecological Urbanism, Circulation, and the Immunization of Nature

Abstract: While 'ecological urbanism' promises the introduction of a new generation of apparatuses, exacting control ever more deeply within the social whole, the logic by which such networks of power operate has remained largely unchanged since the 19th century. This paper will demonstrate the persistence of this logic by placing ecological urbanism within a genealogy of the concept of urbanization. Looking at the work of Spanish civil engineer, Ildfonso Cerda, I will examine his remarkably prescient theory in which he… Show more

“…In response, (more) efficient, precise enclosed urbanisms are produced to bypass perceived socio-ecological constraints of the existing urban climate regime. CE involve the production, maintenance/manipulation and extension/circulation of 'denatured space', that is, this is not a mobilisation of nature, bringing nature into the city in the usual way (some kind of conflation of nature and culture as has been analysed by urban political ecologists over the last 20 years), but more its effacement or 'immunisation' (Adams, 2014). This is, as Luke (1995) argues in the case of Biosphere 2, synthetic nature with an engineering infrastructure.…”
