Native American Periodicals: The Art and Politics of Early Twentieth Century Indigenous Printscapes

Abstract

1 Throughout this essay, the term Native American periodicals is used when referring to Native North American serialized print publications. Otherwise, we follow Mishuana Goeman's lead and use "American Indian," "Native," "Indigenous," and "Native American" alternately throughout this essay depending on context. Being aware, as Goeman writes, that "there are many intersections involved in these labels" (213), we refer to Native North Americans to indicate a generalized group, while being as tribally specific as possible when dealing with concrete examples.This article is based on the research project "Periodicals and Indigenous Modernity," funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG; AOBJ: 666535).
