Nationwide Population-Based Epidemiologic Study on Cerebellar Ataxia in Taiwan

Abstract: Aims: To conduct the first nationwide population-based epidemiologic study on cerebellar ataxia in Taiwan. Methods: Cerebellar ataxia cases were identified from the National Health Insurance Research Database by using the corresponding International Classification of Diseases, Ninth Revision (ICD-9) codes, from January 2005 to December 2007. Age- and sex-specific incidences were estimated by dividing the number of new cases by the population data. Results: During the study, 934 cases were identified (average a… Show more

“…Patients with CAPOS syndrome usually present with relapsing-remitting fever-induced acute-onset cerebellar ataxia during infancy or childhood and frequently show encephalopathy [ 2 ]. FRDA is the most prevalent recessive ataxia in the European population, whereas it accounts for only 0.8% of the total cerebellar ataxias in Taiwan [ 3 ]. The prevalence of neuropathy in FRDA, presented as loss of lower limb reflex, was 74%- 99%, and auditory neuropathy affects only a significant minority [ 4 ].…”

“…Moreover, APAb can be detected in 1-5% of the general population [16]. Recently, a nationwide survey in Taiwan showed an annual incidence of 0.91/100,000 people for cerebellar ataxia [17]. In the Euro-Phospholipid Project, cerebellar ataxia was observed to occur in 0.7% of APS patients during follow-up [18] or with an annual incidence in 140/100,000 APLS patients.…”
