Nationwide comparison of long-term survival and cardiovascular morbidity after acute aortic aneurysm repair in patients with and without type 2 diabetes

Abstract: Objective: Epidemiologic data indicate decreased risk for development, growth, and rupture of abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM). We therefore evaluated mortality and cardiovascular morbidity after acute repair of AAA in diabetic and nondiabetic patients. Methods: In this nationwide observational cohort study of patients registered in the Swedish Vascular Registry and the Swedish National Diabetes Register, we compared mortality and morbidity after acute open (n ¼… Show more

“…Diabetic patients taking insulin-stimulating drugs show reduced mortality and risk of cardiovascular events [16]. In type 2 diabetes mellitus, the effect of incretin decreased [17,18], and the morbidity and mortality of cardiovascular diseases increased [19]. is was mainly due to the decrease of glucagon-like peptide-1 response associated with diet.…”

“…Thus, diabetes is considered to have a protective effect on AAA. 20 , 21 , 22 , 23 Therefore, it is possible that locally induced matrix stabilization such as the PGG treatment we have reported, could effectively slow AAA progression and lower the incidence of AAA rupture.…”

“…As mortality and morbidity after acute AAA surgery are a completely different issue, we refrain from direct comparison with our results in such patients showing reduced mortality in patients with diabetes. 22…”
