National survey on current situation of critical value reporting in 973 laboratories in China

Abstract: IntroductionThe aim of the study was to investigate the state-of-the-art of the performance of critical value reporting and provide recommendations for laboratories setting critical value reporting time frames.Materials and methodsThe National Centre for Clinical Laboratories in China initiated a critical value reporting investigation in 2015. A questionnaire related to critical value reporting policy was sent to 1589 clinical laboratories in China online. The questionnaire consisted of a set of questions rela… Show more

“…Turnaround time values in this study were better than the results of a study conducted by Fei et al in 937 laboratories in China. This study showed an 11 average TAT of 25 minutes. Research conducted by Agarwal, Chillar, and Tripathi in India showed TAT values ranging from 30-120 minutes.…”

“…The use of sigma (σ) metrics is a great success in the areas of customer satisfaction and global profitability, 4 It was introduced into clinical laboratories by David Nevalainen1 in 2000. 5 Currently, sigma metrics had been widely used in many aspects of laboratory quality management including pre-analytic, 6,7 analytic, [8][9][10] and post-analytic 11 phases of testing. The analytical performance of analytes is quantitatively estimated as a sigma value.…”

“…Laboratories generally repeat tests, especially for critical values, before reporting test results (15, 16, 17). Recently, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Q-Probes study (15) found that 61% of laboratories always repeated critical tests.…”

“…Recently, the College of American Pathologists (CAP) Q-Probes study (15) found that 61% of laboratories always repeated critical tests. In a 2015 study of 1,589 laboratories by the National Center for Clinical Laboratories in China, 94.8% of the 973 responding laboratories reported repeat testing before searching for a critical value in the laboratory (17). However, the practicality of routinely verifying each critical value as a result of reanalysis has been questioned in recent years (8, 9, 10, 14, 17, 18).…”
