National research profiles in a changing Europe (1983–2003) An exploratory study of sectoral characteristics in the Triple Helix

Abstract: Eight Eastern European countries joined the European Union in 2004. In this paper, bibliometric methods are used to analyse if the integration of these countries into the EU was accompanied by corresponding changes in their sectoral research profiles. In addition, the authors discuss changes in the national profiles of three accession countries and three EU15 member states during the last two decades. The results confirm that a process of European homogenisation and convergence is taking place, but also show t… Show more

“…The results(the most number of articles in anesthesiology from U.S. and Europe) are similar to the findings that dominant nations in science come from U.S. and Europe [19,20].Referring to the apocryphal story told to discover the co-occurrence about beer and diaper sales [3][4][5], we showed a novel method incorporating SNA with Google maps to explore the data. It can be seen that visual representations rendered to readership is rare in literature.…”

“…Other papers in this cluster also make empirical contributions to the literature by presenting long term trends in Triple Helix relations in Europe (Danell and Persson 2003;Glänzel and Schlemmer 2007) and Asia (Sun and Negishi 2010). Older papers trace changes in the volume of research activities in three TH components and use simple indicators, such as the percentage of co-authored publications (Danell and Persson 2003;Glänzel and Schlemmer 2007), to capture the strength of bilateral and trilateral Triple Helix relations.…”

“…Thus, there is a current trend to measure and compare the scientific productivity and impact of nations (e.g., King 2004, Glänzel & Schlemmer 2007. Brazil has had an outstanding performance in the past decade and now ranks 15 th in scientific productivity and 23 rd in number of citations.…”
