National, regional, and global levels and trends in neonatal mortality between 1990 and 2017, with scenario-based projections to 2030: a systematic analysis

Abstract: Background Reducing neonatal mortality is an essential part of the third Sustainable Development Goal (SDG), to end preventable child deaths. To achieve this aim will require an understanding of the levels of and trends in neonatal mortality. We therefore aimed to estimate the levels of and trends in neonatal mortality by use of a statistical model that can be used to assess progress in the SDG era. With these estimates of neonatal mortality between 1990 and 2017, we then aimed to assess how different targets … Show more

“…Where ln is the natural logarithm, CMR is the child mortality rate, and t 0 and t 1 correspond to study periods. 11,12 Based on this formula, a positive ARR correlates with a reduction in child mortality, while a negative ARR is associated with an increase in the CMR. Table 1 shows the overall ARR (−0.33% per annum) in neonatal mortality (per 1000 live births) for 1990-2013 in Pakistan.…”

“…Although neonatal mortality (NM) worldwide decreased by half between 1990 and 2017, it is projected that by 2030, 27.8 mil-lion newborns will die during the first month of life [1]. In order to reduce neonatal deaths, the World Health Organization (WHO) recommends a series of essential, cost-effective, and easy-to-implement practices [2].…”
