Every university in Greece is obliged to comply with the national legal framework on open data. The rising question is how such a big and diverse organization could support open data from an administrative, legal and technical point of view, in a way that enables gradual improvement of the open data-related services. In this paper, we describe our experience, as University of Crete, for tackling these requirements. In particular, (a) we detail the steps of the process that we followed, (b) we show how an Open Data Catalog can be exploited also in the first steps of this process, (c) we describe the platform that we selected, how we organized the catalog and the metadata selection, (d) we describe extensions that were required, and (e) we discuss the current status, performance indicators, and possible next steps.

This paper analyses the scientific activity related to open science in Spain and its influence on public policy from a bibliometric perspective. For this purpose, Spanish centres' projects and publications on open science from 2010 to 2020 are studied. Subsequently, policy documents using papers related to open science are analysed to study their influence on policymaking. A total of 142 projects and 1491 publications are analysed, 15% of which are mentioned in policy documents.The publications cited in policy documents display high proportions of international collaboration, open access publication and publication in first-quartile journals. The findings underline governments’ leading role in the implementation of open science policies and the funding of open science research. The same government agencies that promote and fund open science research are shown to use that research in their institutional reports, a process known as knowledge flow feedback. Other non-academic actors are also observed to make use of the knowledge produced by open science research, showing how the open science movement has crossed the boundaries of academia.
The identification of oceanographic circulation related features is a valuable tool for environmental and fishery management authorities, commercial use and institutional research. Remote sensing techniques are suitable for detection, as in situ measurements are prohibitively costly, spatially sparse and infrequent. Still, these imagery applications require a certain level of technical and theoretical skill making them practically unreachable to the immediate beneficiaries. In this paper a new geospatial web service is proposed for providing daily data on mesoscale oceanic feature identification in the North Aegean Sea, produced by Sentinel-3 SLSTR Sea Surface Temperature (SST) imagery, to end users. The service encompasses an automated process for: raw data acquisition, interpolation, oceanic feature extraction and publishing through a webGIS application. Level-2 SST data are interpolated through a Co-Kriging algorithm, involving information from short term historical data, in order to retain as much information as possible. A modified gradient edge detection methodology is then applied to the interpolated products for the mesoscale feature extraction. The resulting datasets are served according to the Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) standards and are available for visualization, processing and download though a dedicated web portal.
