NAT screening of blood donors for severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus can potentially prevent transfusion associated transmissions

Abstract: A real-time CoV PCR test is able to detect SARS-CoV in viremic blood donor samples even in the beginning of the disease when patients present minor clinical symptoms. Thus the assay could potentially help to prevent transfusion-associated SARS-CoV transmissions.

“…Human SARS‐CoV transmission occurs by close contact with symptomatic infected individuals (Wu et al ., 2004). Thus far, there is no evidence that the virus is transmitted through the blood supply, although a viraemic phase has been described in the first week after the onset of illness (Grant et al ., 2003; Schmidt et al ., 2004). However, the possibility of introduction of the SARS‐CoV into the blood supply should be prevented to avoid reemergence of this infectious agent by human to human route.…”

“…Potential donors are indefinitely deferred who have spent a cumulative 3 months in the United Kingdom between 1980 and 1996, the period when unsafe cattle feeding practices led to an outbreak of bovine spongiform encephalopathy, or "mad cow" disease. Criteria to avoid severe acute respiratory syndrome 66 were in effect at one time, and Gulf War veterans were deferred from blood donation from 1991 to 1993 to avoid the transmission of leishmaniasis. 64 Also indefinitely deferred are those who spent a cumulative 6 months on European military bases or a cumulative 5 years in certain European countries other than the UK, as are those who received a blood transfusion in the UK from 1980 to the present.…”
