Nasopharyngectomy for Recurrent Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma: A Review of 31 Patients and Prognostic Factors

Abstract: High recurrent T stage, skull base involvement, repeated recurrence before surgery, nodal metastasis, and positive surgical margins carry a poor prognosis. This is particularly evident with high T stage and concurrent nodal metastasis. However, patients with low T stage have a survival advantage and benefit most from surgical treatment.

“…When a tumor invades the skull base and the neighboring tissues (including the brain lobe cavernous sinus and internal carotid arteries), it is very difficulty to eradiate. In the previous reports, tumor with intracranial and skull base invasion was considered a contraindication for salvage surgery [23]. In the present study, 17 consecutive patients underwent skull base surgery between 1997 and 2005.…”

“…To et al [23] reported their experience of salvage surgery in 31 patients, with 6 patients having concurrent cervical nodal metastasis. During the follow-up, 4 of them died, with a mean survival of 9 months, and the authors concluded that cervical nodal metastases carry a poor prognosis for salvage surgery of recurrent NPC.…”
