Nasopharyngeal carcinoma: clinical trends

Abstract: Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is one of the most difficult diseases to diagnose at an early stage. The clinical presentation of 122 patients with confirmed NPC is described and the findings analysed. The common modes of presentation and cases where detailed nasopharyngeal examination need to be performed are highlighted. We emphasize the importance of health education and training for primary care physicians for early detection of these cases.

“…A similar bimodal curve was shown in other populations of intermediate incidence of NPC (Ellouz et al, 1978;Jamal, 1991). In contrast, no such bimodal age incidence curve was noticed in populations with a high incidence rate of NPC including Hong Kong (Sham et al, 1990), Malaysia (Indudharan et al, 1997) and in Chinese populations in China, Singapore and Hong Kong (Muir et al, 1987) (Table IV).…”

“…In general, the frequency of aural symptoms at presentation in this study (tinnitus- 15% and hearing impairment- 23.3%), is comparable to those observed by Indudharan et al . in their study, tinnitus and hearing impairment occurred in 12.3% and 18% of patients respectively [ 9 ]. Based on histological sub types, nonkeratinizing nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NK-NPC) showed the highest frequency of 94.5% in this study similar to figures of 94.6% in a recent study by Yates et al .…”

“…One retrospective study of the clinical presentation of 122 patients (almost all being Malay or Chinese) with confirmed nasopharyngeal carcinoma shows the frequency of occurrence of clinical features as presenting complaints 5 . Neck swelling was the presenting complaint in 66 per cent of these patients, epistaxis in 31 per cent, and decreased hearing in 22 per cent.…”
