Nasolacriminal Dysfunction

Abstract: This investigation describes the normal function of the lacrimal drainage system of the eye. The intent of the presentation is to illustrate by clinical examples and pertinent literature, those alterations of normal function occurring from obstruction, trauma, or neoplasm. Sixty-nine patients with lacrimal dysfunction are included; 19 are offered in detail to illustrate principles of surgical management. It is not within the scope of this discussion to examine any condition which may cause primary hyperlacrima… Show more

“…Biosynthesis of Substrates for PMNL Reductase. Unlabeled LTB4, 6-/ran5-LTB4, 12-epi-6-tranj-LTB4, and 5-HETE were prepared by incubation of arachidonic acid and A23187 (10 JIM) with porcine PMNL which were pretreated with ETYA (Powell, 1983;Borgeat et al, 1981). LTB5 was prepared under identical conditions from 5,8,11,14,17-eicosa-pentaenoic acid.…”

“…LTB5 was prepared under identical conditions from 5,8,11,14,17-eicosa-pentaenoic acid. Unlabeled 12(5)-HETE and 12-epi-8m,6-/rart5-LTB4 were prepared similarly by incubating arachidonic acid and A23187 (10 /uM) with porcine PMNL in the absence of ETYA (Powell, 1983;Borgeat et al, 1981). l-14C-Labeled LTB4,12-epi-8-cw, 6-trans-LTB4, 6-tra«5-LTB4, 12-epi-6-tra/25-LTB4, and 5-HETE were prepared by incubation of [l-14C]arachidonic acid with purified human PMNL and A23187 (10 /jM) for 5 min at 37 °C (Borgeat & Samuelsson, 1979).…”

“…Fractures of weak bony walls of intraosseous part of nasolacrimal duct render high risk, of laceratrions however with low incidence [8] . Powell [9] found obstructive nasolacrimal symptoms in 40 % of patients with medial orbital fractures. Unger [10] identified 36 fractures on CT evaluation of 25 patients of facial trauma with complications arising out of lacrimal apparatus obstruction in five of these patients.…”

“…The osseous part of the NLD is most vulnerable, as fractures often propagate through the structurally weak bony lacrimal canal [28,29]. Of 96 patients with medial orbital fractures studied by Powell [20] planning.…”
