Introduction: Human nose is one of the important anthropometric parameters for identification of ethnicity and sex of an individual of an unknown identity. The nasal index holds a great value in anthropological studies, because it is one of the anthropometric indices acknowledged in nasal surgery as well as management. The study aims to find the mean nasal index and the nose type of dental students of Kantipur Dental College of Nepal. Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 140 dental students of age groups 17-25 years, in the Department of Anatomy, Kantipur Dental College Teaching Hospital and Research Center, Basundhara, Kathmandu. The studied population belongs to dental students of Kantipur Dental College and Research Centre. The nasal parameters including the nasal height, nasal width was measured using Digital Vernier Caliper and the nose was classified in three different types based on the value of nasal index. Results: The mean nasal index of total population was 81.34±14.88 mm with confidence interval range of 78.85 and 83.83 mm. Mesorrhine type of nose was found to be most common among the total population. Mean nasal index in male is 84.49±12.46 mm and in female is 80.66±15.32 mm. Conclusions: This study concludes that the mean values of nasal index of all the students falls under mesorrhine (medium) type of nose.

Background: The nasal index determination is one of the most commonly used anthropometric parameters in classifying human races. Aim: The objective of this study was to determine the normal parameters of the external nose (Nasal height, width and nasal index) in the south Indian population. Subjects and Methods: The study was conducted randomly on healthy subjects of both sexes. Nasal height and width were measured using a vernier caliper. Then, the nasal index was determined for each subject. The obtained data were subjected to statistical analysis (SPSS Version 21). Results: A total of 143 subjects, 73 males and 70 females, aged 18-23 years, were enrolled in the study. The study showed the existence of sexual dimorphism in nasal morphology, appearing after the age of 20 years. The mean nasal index in the investigated adults was 42.1 ± 8.4 in males, and females were 31.7 ± 3.8, respectively. The dominant nasal type was Leptorrhine in male 46.5% (n=34) and female was Mesorrhine 41.4 % (n=29) respectively. Conclusion: This study can help in understanding the need for those who want a more "shapely" nose. Forensic medicine, Genetic counseling, Anthropological research, Cosmetic, reconstructive surgery, Orthodontics, and specific manufacturing industries, benefit from age-and gender-based data of the study.

The objective of the present study was to determine the anthropometric parameters of the external nose in a Kazakh population for the subsequent elaboration of the algorithms of and approaches to the planning of ethnic-specific rhinoplasty. The study included 500 ethnic Kazakhs (197 women and 303 men) at the age varying from 16 to 25 (mean 20.6±3.5) years. The following parameters were calculated; the height and the width of the nose, nasal index, lobular index, nasolabial angle, nasal projection index, projection and rotation of the tip of the nose. It was found that the nasal index in male and female Kazakhs was 80.8±0.53 and 79.4±3.17 respectively which corresponds to mesorhinia and is more characteristic of the Europeoid race. The nasofrontalindex in men andwomen was 138.94±5.71 ad 130.1±8.25 degrees respectively. Rotation of the tip of the nose in men was 78.45±2.24 degrees in men and 73.92±4.32 degrees in women. Goode's nasal projection index was 57.25±4.36%. The nasal tip projection was estimated at 67.9±5.21 and 76.72±4.17 in men and women respectively. It is concluded based on the results of the present study that noses in Kazakh men and women have certain specific masculine and feminine anthropometric features making them different from the typical «Asiatic» noses because some of their proportions are more characteristic of the Europeoid race. The height of the nose in the Kazakhs is lowest among the three races. It indicates that the main concern as regards rhinoplasty in the Kazakh population is the dorsal augmentation. The present study provided the reference information on the parameters of the external nose in the Kazakh population that may be of value not only in terms of reconstructive and aesthetic rhinosurgery but also for the purpose of forensic medical and other expertises.
