Nasal carriage of enterotoxin-producingStaphylococcus aureusamong restaurant workers in Kuwait City

Abstract: SUMMARYEnterotoxin-producing Staphylococcus aureus is a common cause of staphylococcal food poisoning. To determine the incidence of carriage of enterotoxin-producing S. aureus in a sample of the healthy population in Kuwait city, restaurant workers in the city were screened for nasal carriage of S. aureus. 26-6% of 500 workers studied carried S. aureus and 86-6% of the S. aureus produced staphylococcal enterotoxins. 28 % produced enterotoxin A, 28&5 % produced enterotoxin B, 16-4% produced enterotoxin C and 3… Show more

“…Thus, in contrast to equine, feline, and other animal hosts, a substantial portion of the canine population tested harbors enterotoxigenic S. intermedius. The quite frequent detection of the sec gene in S. intermedius isolates studied here (overall, 11.3%) was comparable with the SEC prevalence in S. aureus of about 5 to 15% (1,44,50).…”

“…The multiplex PCR DNA-EIA to detect simultaneously the SE-encoding genes (sea, seb, sec [1][2][3] , sed, and see) was performed as previously described (9). For carryover prevention, the uracil DNA glycosylase system (Boehringer) was used.…”

“…Whereas 10 of the 11 SE-producing CNS produced SEB, three of the four S. aureus isolates produced SEC. In a previous study, the majority of nasal S. aureus isolates from food handlers in Kuwait City produced either SEA or SEB [27]. The finding that S. aureus isolates from the hands produced mostly SEC would indicate that they did not originate from the workers ' nares.…”
