Staphylococcal food poisoning (SFP) caused by enterotoxigenic staphylococci is one of the main food-borne diseases. In contrast to Staphylococcus aureus, a systematic screening for the enterotoxins has not yet been performed on the genomic level for the coagulase-positive species S. intermedius. Therefore, the enterotoxigenic potential of 281 different veterinary (canine, n ‫؍‬ 247; equine, n ‫؍‬ 23; feline, n ‫؍‬ 9; other, n ‫؍‬ 2) and 11 human isolates of S. intermedius was tested by using a multiplex PCR DNA-enzyme immunoassay system targeting the staphylococcal enterotoxin genes sea, seb, sec, sed, and see. Molecular results were compared by in vitro testing of enterotoxin production by two immunoassays. A total of 33 (11.3%) S. intermedius isolates, including 31 (12.6%) canine isolates, 1 equine isolate, and 1 human isolate, tested positive for the sec gene. In vitro production of the respective enterotoxins was detected in 30 (90.9%) of these isolates by using immunological tests. In contrast, none of 65 veterinary specimen-derived isolates additionally tested and comprising 13 (sub)species of coagulase-negative staphylococci were found to be enterotoxigenic. This study shows on both molecular and immunological levels that a substantial number of S. intermedius isolates harbor the potential for enterotoxin production. Since evidence for noninvasive zoonotic transmission of S. intermedius from animal hosts to humans has been documented, an enterotoxigenic role of this microorganism in SFP via contamination of food products may be assumed.

Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) were isolated from the hands of food handlers in 50 restaurants in Kuwait City and studied for the production of staphylococcal enterotoxins, toxic shock syndrome toxin-1, slime and resistance to antimicrobial agents. One or a combination of staphylococcal enterotoxins A, B or C were produced by 6% of the isolates, with the majority producing enterotoxin B. Toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 was detected in c. 7% of the isolates; 47% produced slime. In all, 21% of the isolates were resistant to tetracycline and 11.2% were resistant to propamidine isethionate and mercuric chloride. There was no correlation between slime and toxin production or between slime production and antibiotic resistance. The detection of enterotoxigenic CNS on food handlers suggests that such strains may contribute to food poisoning if food is contaminated by them and held in conditions that allow their growth and elaboration of the enterotoxins. It is recommended that enterotoxigenic CNS should not be ignored when investigating suspected cases of staphylococcal food poisoning.

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate Staphylococcus aureus carriage rates and to determine risk factors among hotel staff. Methods: Dacron ® swabs were used to collect the nasal and throat specimens which were inoculated on mannitol salt agar and incubated for 24-48 hours. Identification of S. aureus was made on the basis of colony characteristics on mannitol salt agar, Gram staining, catalase and tube coagulase test. S. aureus isolates were screened for methicillin resistance by disk diffusion method. Potential risk factors (age, sex, diabetes mellitus, chronic lung disease, alcohol consumption, smoking or living with a current smoker, outpatient health care use in the past 12 months, hospitalization in the past 12 months, use of antibiotics in the past 30 days) were recorded. Results: Of the 715 persons, 642 (89.9%) were male and the mean age was 25 ± 8.6. In total, S. aureus was isolated from 73 (10.2%) of the 715 persons and only 3 (0.4%) of the isolated strains were resistant to methicillin. Among the risk factors, only smoking and living in smoking places were negatively related to carriage (p<0.05). Conclusions: Methicillin-sensitive and resistant S. aureus carriage in hotel workers were not found higher than other community based studies.
