Narrow-linewidth broadly tunable Yb-doped Q-switched fiber laser using multimode interference filter

Abstract: A narrow-linewidth broadly tunable Yb-doped Q-switched fiber laser using an acousto-optic modulator and multimode interference filter (MMIF) in the linear bulk cavity resonator and an all-fiber ring cavity resonator has been demonstrated. Insertion of an MMIF in the linear cavity resonator using bulk components decreased the spectral bandwidth of the Q-switched signal by two orders of magnitude from 11 to less than 0.1 nm. Spectral tunability of more than 16 nm in the range from 1057 to 1073 nm has also been a… Show more

“…[ 29 ] Following up on this work, a few years later, in 2017, Chakravarty et al, extended the laser tuning of a Yb MMI fiber laser to a QS operation. [ 30 ] They achieved laser tuning over 16 nm, in the range from 1057 to 1073 nm. A similar PC‐based stress‐optic implementation was reported by Khattak et al, in 2018, where they coiled a long MMI filter (1 m‐long) in a PC pad to tune an Er MMI fiber laser.…”

“…Multimode interference (MMI) in optical fibers has been used for several practical applications viz. sensors [1][2][3], wavelength tunable laser sources [4,5], multi-wavelength laser sources [6], high power fiber lasers with good beam quality [7], and more recently as saturable absorbers (SAs) for Q-switching and mode-locking in different rare earth doped fiber lasers [8,9]. Mode-locking operation in fiber lasers using MMI based SA has been demonstrated in various operating regimes viz.…”
