Narrow-band (TL-01) UVB air-conditioned phototherapy for chronic severe adult atopic dermatitis

Abstract: In an open study of 21 severely affected adult atopic dermatitis patients, air-conditioned narrow-band UVB phototherapy using the Philips TL-01 lamp three times weekly for 12 weeks resulted in a 68% reduction in atopic dermatitis severity scores, with a concomitant 88% reduction in potent topical steroid use. Follow-up at 24 weeks revealed that six patients had relapsed to > 70% of pre-phototherapy severity scores; the remaining 15 continued to derive long-term benefit. The mean value of potent topical steroid… Show more

“…Narrowband UVB phototherapy has thus significantly improved the therapeutic efficacy of conventional broadband UVB (290 -320 nm) phototherapy for skin diseases such as psoriasis, atopic dermatitis, vitiligo and others. (10)(11)(12)(13) Narrowband UVB is widely used in the treatment of skin disease, and the current trend toward the increased use of narrowband UVB phototherapy is justified.(14) Its carcinogenic potential is judged to be substantially less than that of psoralen plus UVA (PUVA) photochemotherapy.(15) Although the results of studies in mice indicate that narrowband UVB could induce more skin cancers than broadband UVB therapy, (16) the participants in a workshop on the use of narrowband UVB in phototherapy concluded that the long-term human cancer risk should be no greater than that with broadband phototherapy. (17) When the DNA damage in keratinocytes induced by narrowband or broadband UVB was measured by single cell gel electrophoresis (comet assay), narrowband UVB produced less DNA damage than broadband UVB at equal doses.…”

“…Many studies have found narrow-band UVB treatment to be effective in atopic dermatitis. In a prospective study on 21 patients with atopic dermatitis, it has been reported that, among patients receiving narrow-band UVB treatment, 68% have shown decrease in terms of the severity of the disease while 88% of the patients have shown decrease in the need for topical steroids (9). In our study, we provided 5 atopic dermatitis and 9 vitiligo patients with narrow-band UVB treatment.…”
