In the last few decades, a growing dissatisfaction with traditional approaches can be observed in migration and refugee studies. In particular, the widespread focus on the “refugee” and “migrant” as exclusive objects of study has been criticized for its underlying tendency of repeating the binary polarization between migrant and non-migrant, native and foreign as well as majority and minority. This chapter considers the short stories of Syrian journalist and writer Rasha Abbas against this background. Instead of reducing her stories to the depiction of flight and exile, this chapter explores her stories as aesthetic expressions of what can be called the “art of survival”—the concept focusing on strategies of empowerment and tactics to regain autonomy. In Abbas’ prose, this “art of survival” is achieved and expressed through the blending of times and spaces as well as the aesthetic transformation of reality into surreal realms. Experiences of war, displacement, exile, and patterns of exclusion in the new homeland merge into complex pictures of the human capacity to reframe and reinvent a given reality. When viewed from this perspective, the surreal and psychedelic nature of her writing intensifies the power of aesthetic freedom, thus helping overcome traditional representations of migrants and refugees in cultural expressions and literature.

En 1934 el escritor Enrique Espinoza (seudónimo de Samuel Glusberg) publicó su segundo libro de cuentos, Ruth y Noemí. En ese volumen, abarcaba una vez más una de las principales problemáticas de la literatura judeoargentina de principios de siglo XX: cómo concebir las relaciones interculturales entre judíos y no judíos en pos de la construcción de una nueva pertenencia nacional. Este artículo se propone analizar específicamente las concepciones que se traman en dos cuentos de Ruth y Noemí (“La sombra blanca” y “Ruth y Noemí”) sobre la errancia de los migrantes judíos, las relaciones interculturales y la posibilidad de elaboración de una nueva pertenencia en la Argentina. Dicho análisis permitirá, por una parte, dar cuenta del modo en que dichas concepciones se expresan en ambos cuentos a través de una reelaboración simbólica de figuras vinculadas al acervo cultural judío (tales como el schlemiel, Rut y Ester) y de una figura reapropiada desde el discurso antijudío cristiano como es el caso de Ashavero. Y, por otra parte, demostrar cómo del entramado dialógico de ambos cuentos surge una serie de postulados sobre las relaciones interculturales según la cual serían condiciones ineludibles para la construcción de una nueva pertenencia nacional para los migrantes judíos no solo el fin del antisemitismo, sino también una relación novedosa y flexible con las tradiciones judías.
