“…This study has theoretical implications for future research and also practical implications for a number of communities including professional organizations, therapy groups, or support groups, in which novice members can use narrative structure and strategies to construct their agentive identities from the bottom up, and central members can use narrative scaffoldings to help novices to construct their agency in their zone of proximal development (Vygotsky 1978). In addition, this study not only bridges the gap between "studies of identity performance in individual narratives and habitual or stable practices of narrative identity socialization" (Miller, Koven, and Lin 2012: 194), but also moves the study of narrative beyond speech events (Wortham and Rhodes 2015) to the empirical domain of professional socialization.…”

“…Despite beliefs that identity is selfinterpretative and constituted through the irreplaceable sense-making device of narratives (Bruner 1986(Bruner , 1990(Bruner , 2002, few studies have explored empirically how professional identities are socialized into being through naturally occurring narratives. In addition, Wortham and Rhodes (2015) recently suggest studying "the chains of narrating events" in order to explore the trajectory of social identification.…”

“…The analysis of the PSTs' narratives as trajectories of small stories across narrating events contributes to connect what appears to be isolated and arbitrary comment as, in fact, part of larger patterns. This particular approach to narrative analysis demonstrates how linguistic cues in talk and text presuppose earlier cues, which should contribute to our understanding of individual narrating events as interconnected with past events (Wortham and Rhodes 2015). It would benefit future studies to collect a larger sample of linguistic autobiographies about PSTs' lived experience of language.…”
