Divergence in opinion over how farm animals should be cared for is creating a disconnect between livestock farming and the public that risks a loss of “social license” to farm. One proposed solution for the dairy farming community is to engage more constructively with the public to develop a shared vision of the industry's future; however, farmers and veterinarians remain reluctant to validate public opinions on farm animal care, in particular, often viewing them as naïve or impractical. Understanding the interpretive frames through which people make sense of dairy farming could help the dairy farming community engage more constructively with public opinion, thereby reducing conflict and providing opportunities to change communication or practice. Hence, frame analysis was conducted on transcripts of 60 face-to-face interviews with members of the UK public, first defining frames using reflexive thematic analysis, then considering the effect of these frames on those holding them. The results showed that dairy farming was mainly characterized by two entities: the cow and the farmer. Three frames were developed for the cow: she was perceived as i) enduring, which induced a sense of moral responsibility for her well-being among participants; ii) a fellow or companion, which led to feelings of a shared or parallel life with her; and iii) a force of nature, where the cow's connection with the natural world and “otherness” was appreciated, or even longed for. These connections were unexpectedly widespread within the sample, with many participants simultaneously holding two or even three frames. The farmer was seen through two frames: i) traditional; or ii) modernizing, but both frames had positive and negative narratives depending on the perceived care of the cow, causing confusion or even conflict about the care the farmer actually delivered. These findings provide new insights into the interpretive lenses through which the public makes sense of the dairy cow and her care, not least the bond the public themselves feel with the animal. They offer fresh opportunities for the dairy industry to improve engagement through more reflexive communication or modification of farming practices to better fit societal expectations about dairy cow welfare.

Global concerns over environmental and social issues in agrifood value chains have increased and are reflected in a number of voluntary sustainability standards and regulatory initiatives. However, these initiatives are often based on poor knowledge of production realities, creating a disconnect between producing and consuming countries. Through narrative analysis, this paper reveals asymmetries in the responsibilities of the various actors participating in Ecuadorian banana value chains, providing clear problem- and solution-framings. Despite the broad range of actors interviewed, our analysis reveals convergence in two main narratives that reflect asymmetries amongst local actors in terms of their ability to participate, ability to maintain participation, and adaptation strategies in view of changing external factors. One narrative relates to sustainability adaptations, the cost of which is not shared among all value chain actors. This is combined with a downward trend in the price of bananas and the lack of a differentiated price to account for losses and costs arising from increasing sustainability standards. Another narrative reflects a value chain structure that threatens small-farm survival. It highlights the urgency of protecting small-farm activity by enforcing national regulation and developing new market segments/models that understand small-scale producer reality. Study results show that the multitude of standards is not seen as beneficial and that downstream actors rather wish for common minimum standards to reduce business costs. Compatibility between standards and local realities should be a priority for global sustainability standards adoption. Building on the problems and solution-framings of local value chain links, we give voice to local actors, and link their perceptions to existing literature and discursive politics while contributing to social transparency and addressing the democratic deficit in agrifood value chains.

ZusammenfassungGroße Unternehmen und insbesondere Banken sind wichtige regionale Identitätsanker. Veränderungen bei den Eigentümern können nicht nur beträchtliche Auswirkungen auf Wirtschaftsstruktur und Beschäftigungsdynamik haben, sondern auch auf das Image und Selbstverständnis einer Region. In diesem Sinne geht der Beitrag den Fragen nach, wie aktive und passive Unternehmensübernahmen im regionalen Kontext – also Übernahmen im Ausland durch inländische Unternehmen und Übernahmen im Inland durch ausländische Unternehmen – in den Medien dargestellt, welche Ursachen und Folgen diskutiert und welche Argumente verwendet werden und ob sich die Darstellung unter sich wandelnden wirtschaftlichen Rahmenbedingungen im Laufe der Zeit verändert. Vermitteln die Medien alle Übernahmen nach ähnlichen Kriterien, die einer den Mainstream-Medien oft zugeschriebenen neoliberalen Grundhaltung entsprechen, oder folgen sie eher einer identitätsbildenden „Wir versus sie“-Dichotomie, die zu einer Ungleichbehandlung aktiver und passiver Übernahmen beiträgt? Die Ergebnisse einer Langzeitanalyse der Berichterstattung der Wiener Qualitätspresse über Übernahmen im regionalen Bankensektor zeigen eine deutliche „asymmetrische“ Darstellung aktiver und passiver Übernahmen, die wir „regionale Schizophrenie“ nennen: Die Implikationen für Wien, seinen Arbeitsmarkt, die Rentabilität lokaler Banken und seine Position als Bankenzentrum bilden für aktive und passive Übernahmen den bedeutungsvollsten Bezugspunkt. Methodisch zeigt das angewandte kombinierte quantitativ-qualitative Verfahren das Potenzial des Framing-Ansatzes für die Analyse der medialen Darstellung wirtschaftlicher Themen.
