Naringenin from Citrus junos Has an Inhibitory Effect on Acetylcholinesterase and a Mitigating Effect on Amnesia

Abstract: This study was performed to identify safe and more effective acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease. The total methanol extract of Citrus junos had a significant inhibitory effect on AChE in vitro. By sequential fractionation of C. junos, the active component was finally identified as naringenin. Naringenin inhibited AChE activity in a dose-dependent manner. In this study, we also evaluated the anti-amnesic activity of naringenin, a major flavanone constituent isolated f… Show more

“…Inhibition of AChE serves as a strategy in the treatment of AD, senile dementia, ataxia, myasthenia gravis, and Parkinson's disease. 3,4) There are a few synthetic medicines, e.g., tacrine, donepezil, and the natural product-based rivastigmine, for treatment of the cognitive dysfunction and memory loss associated with AD.…”

“…48 There have also been claims that nutrient supplementation could restore immune function and boost CD4 + T cell counts in people with early stages of HIV infection. 49 Vitamin B 12 could potentially be a useful antioxidant as it directs reaction with reactive oxygen species and through glutathione sparing effect, can modify signaling molecules to decrease oxidative stress and increase total antioxidant capacity. 50 However, such effects are yet to be evaluated in HIV-infected persons.…”
