Narcissism and perspective taking: The mediating effect of need for control

Abstract: We investigated the mediating role of need for control in the relationship between narcissism and perspective taking. A sample of 178 college students completed measures of narcissism, empathy (including empathic concern and perspective taking), need for control, and self-esteem. Results show that narcissism had a direct negative effect on perspective taking. Need for control partially mediated the relationship between narcissism and perspective taking when controlling for self-esteem. That is, participants w… Show more

“…Additionally, narcissism has also been associated with a greater desire to maintain control, which in turn negatively influences perspective-taking (Lee & Kang, 2020). These findings are consistent with current theory (e.g., Ronningstam, 2009) suggesting that the ability for narcissistic individuals to empathize is situational and dependent on opportunities to avoid narcissistic injury and strengthen feelings of superiority.…”

“…(2011) found a similar contradiction: the NPD vs. control group showed signi cant impairments in emotional empathy on the MET but not on other measures of emotional empathy such as the IRI empathic concern subscale (19). These mixed results are consistent with more recent ndings from Lee and Kang (21) in a non-clinical sample.…”

“…Empathy with added cognitive processing can turn into sympathy (a form of mentalizing), personal distress, or a combination of the two (37). It seems that the lack of empathy of narcissists that have been reported in the literature (18,20,21,38) is not due to narcissists' inability to adopt others' perspectives. Indeed, people high in Narcissism have a motivation-based impairment in their cognitive empathic functioning, like what is seen in psychopathy (11,39).…”

“…Additionally, our study supports the idea that maladaptive aspects of narcissism, and perhaps those closely associated with grandiose narcissism, may hamper the accuracy of “mind reading” as suggested by emotion identification results ( Hart et al, 2018 ). These disparities can be attributed not only to deficiencies but also to motivational factors in high narcissistic individuals ( Baskin-Sommers et al, 2014 ; Hepper et al, 2014b ; Lee and Kang, 2020 ), making it challenging to distinguish between the two.…”
