Aim:This in vitro study evaluated the degree of dentinal tubule occlusion and depth of penetration of nano-hydroxyapatite (nHAp) derived from chicken eggshell powder with and without the addition of 2% sodium fluoride (NaF) using scanning electron microscope (SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscope (CLSM).Materials and Methods:nHAp was synthesized and characterized using X-ray diffraction and SEM-energy dispersive spectroscopy. Dentin discs were obtained from extracted teeth, pretreated with 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid for 5 min and were divided into four groups based on the experimental agents as follows: Group 1: Untreated (control), Group 2: 2% NaF, Group 3: nHAp, Group 4: Combination of nHAp and 2% NaF. The treatment protocol was carried out for 7 days, after which the specimens were viewed under SEM and CLSM.Statistical Analysis Used:One-way ANOVA and Tukey's post hoc multiple comparison tests (P < 0.05).Results:All the experimental agents occluded the dentinal tubules, but to varying degrees and depths. Specimens treated with the combination of nHAp and 2% NaF showed complete dentinal tubular occlusion and significantly greater depth of penetration than those treated with nHAp and 2% NaF alone.Conclusion:The combination of nHAp and 2% NaF was the most effective in occluding dentinal tubules.

SažetakNanotehnologija je nauka koja se bavi istraživanjem i razvojem uređaja i materijala na molekularnom, odnosno, atomskom nivou, koja će u bliskoj budućnosti uticati na gotovo svaki aspekt ljudskog života. Danas možemo reći da je nanotehnologija sve prisutnija u polju medicinske dijagnostike i lečenja, uključujući i stomatologiju. Istraživači iz oblasti stomatoloških nauka uveliko istražuju potencijalne koristi nanotehnologije inkorporirane u postojeće terapeutske modalitete. Glavno polje njene primene u stomatologiji predstavljaju novi dijagnostički sistemi, lokalni agensi za oslobađanje leka, restorativni materijali, regenerativni materijali, materijali za koštane i tkivne graftove kao i poboljšanje strukture površine endostalnih implanata. Ovaj revijski rad pruža uvid u trenutni razvoj nanotehnologije u stomatologiji i razmatra njenu potencijalnu buduću primenu. AbstractNanotechnology is a science that deals with the research and development of materials and devices at the atomic or molecular level. In the near future, almost every aspect of human life will be influenced by nanotechnologies. With the advancement in the technology, it is also getting incorporated in various medical diagnostic and treatment fields, including dentistry (nanodentistry). Researchers in the field of dentistry have explored the potential of nanoparticles in the existing therapeutic modalities with moderate success. The key implementations in the field of dentistry includes new diagnostic systems, local drug delivery agents, restorative materials, regenerative materials, bone and tissue graft materials and implant surface modifications. This review provides detailed insights into the current nanotehnology development in the field of dentistry, and discusses potential future uses of nanotechnology.

The present lecture begins with a brief overview of the professional and scientific journey taken by Rudolf Schoenheimer, before turning to a discussion of the power of isotopic tracers in nutrition research. Schoenheimer's remarkable contributions to the study of intermediary metabolism and the turnover of body constituents, based initially on compounds tagged with 2H and later with 15N, spanned a mere decade. It is difficult, however, to overestimate the enormous impact of Schoenheimer's research on the evolution of biological science. After a relative hiatus, following Schoenheimer's death in 1941, in the use of stable nuclides as tracers in metabolism and nutrition, especially in human subjects, there is now an expanded and exciting range of techniques, experimental protocols and stable-isotope tracer compounds that are helping to probe the dynamic aspects of the metabolism of the major energy-yielding substrates, amino acids and other N-containing compounds, vitamins and mineral elements in human subjects. Various aspects of the contemporary applications of these tracers in nutrition research are covered in the present lecture.
