Nanotechnology Applied to Cellulosic Materials

Abstract: In recent years, nanocellulosic materials have attracted special attention because of their performance in different advanced applications, biodegradability, availability, and biocompatibility. Nanocellulosic materials can assume three distinct morphologies, including cellulose nanocrystals (CNC), cellulose nanofibers (CNF), and bacterial cellulose (BC). This review consists of two main parts related to obtaining and applying nanocelluloses in advanced materials. In the first part, the mechanical, chemical, an… Show more

“…These production methods with advantages and disadvantages can be presented in Figure 3. Microbial sources for producing nanofibers are considered an important approach, which is applied to many fields such as bacterial cellulose nanofiber [38], microbial fuel cells [39], microbial polysaccharides for controlled drug release [40], and monitoring of food packaging [41]. These fields will be discussed in the following sections.…”

“…This is a promising route, as conventional routes require complex catalysts and sometimes require high temperatures (Table 16). Several examples of ultrasound-assisted oxidation and hydrolysis reactions to produce nanocrystals from lignocellulosic biomass were recently reviewed [124].…”

“…Non-spherical NPs are generally fabricated using particle replication [ 17 ], microfluidics [ 18 ], film stretching, self-assembly [ 19 ], laser ablation [ 20 ], and high-pressure homogenization [ 21 , 22 ]. So far, non-spherical NPs, such as rod, tube, square, octahedron, star [ 23 ], cube, bowl [ 24 ], filament [ 25 ], cluster, disc, flower, needle, star, and spindle, which consist of polymer, carbon, silica, or metal, have been fabricated and reported [ 15 ].…”
