Nanostructured Epoxy-Based Anticorrosive Coatings

Abstract: A functionalized epoxy resin (DGEBA) was synthesized from abietic acid, through the esterification and condensation reactions between the carboxyl groups of abietic acid and the basic functional groups of an epoxy resin. This method of synthesis increases the epoxy resin surface adhesion, as well as the chemical and thermal stability, for being used as a protective coating against corrosion of copper plates. Characterization analyses included FTIR and SEM of both raw and functionalized epoxy resin substrates p… Show more

“…Extensive research has been conducted on polymeric matrices where ceramic particles are embedded [16] [17] [18]. By combining the flexibility and strength of polymers with the hardness and corrosion resistance of ceramics, it becomes possible to have all these properties in a single coating layer [14][16] [19]. We present the synthesis with the inclusion of silica particles by an in-situ reaction; with the aim to create a truly hybrid-structured material that can diminish the number of layers used in the anticorrosive systems, that are usually multilayered, which would be able to combine the anticorrosive properties of PMMA and silica particles.…”

“…The invention and application of epoxy resins have brought great convenience to people's lives [1]. Epoxy resins are widely used in industry for various applications, such as adhesives [2][3][4], coatings [5,6], packaging [7,8], and other structural materials [9][10][11]. The epoxy resins have a higher degree of crosslinks, thus showing thermosetting properties; for instance, higher degrees of rigidness and better strength and dimensional stability.…”
