Nanoscale chromium carbides induced abnormal hardness in dissimilar metal welds

Abstract: This study showed that high-density nano-precipitates, which have not been observed before, formed in the carbon-enriched zone located 20 µm away from the fusion boundary of the dissimilar metal welds of Alloy 52M and A508 steel. The nano-precipitate, which was named as CrC x in this study, was in a rodlike shape and shorter than 30 nm. The atoms of CrC x were arranged as a face-centered cubic (FCC) crystal. The CrC x precipitates have a lattice parameter of 4.08 Å and a cube-on-cube orientation relationship w… Show more

“…Optimization of alloy elements can modulate the properties of WMs. Some scholars [12][13][14][15] reported that the toughness of WMs of weathering steel can be improved by optimizing the content of Cu, Cr, and Ti. Among these reports, Si, as an indispensable alloying element for weathering steel welds, improves corrosion resistance and also plays a role of solid solution strengthening for WMs of weathering steel [16][17][18].…”
