Abstract: , Ian MacLaren and co‐workers report the discovery of novel Nd‐oxide nanorod precipitates in Nd/Ti co‐doped bismuth ferrite. The 3D structure of these unique nanoscale objects is reconstructed using a combination of atomic resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy imaging and spectroscopy with density functional calculations, which also reveal novel electronic properties around the nanorods.

Enhanced photocatalytic performance of Ag-decorated BiFeO3 in visible light region

In this paper, a novel photocatalyst, made up of Ag/BiFeO 3 nanocomposites activated by visible light, was successfully synthesized using a sol-gel process, followed by a chemical reduction method. The as-prepared BiFeO 3 particles and Ag/BiFeO 3 nanocomposites were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. The results showed that the metal Ag nanoparticles with diameter of 20-50 nm are anchored on the surface of BiFeO 3 . Meanwhile, the photocatalytic experiments demonstrated that the Ag/BiFeO 3 composites had excellent photocatalytic activity for the decomposition of methyl orange in visible light, which far exceeded that of the pure BiFeO 3 . These results revealed Ag loading could significantly improve the photocatalytic property of BiFeO 3 . Recycle experiments showed the nanocomposites had an excellent recoverability, suggesting stable photoactivity. Finally, we discuss the photocatalytic mechanism of nanocomposites. The enhanced photoactivity of Agdecorated BiFeO 3 photocatalyst is most likely attributed to the electronic effect of Ag nanoparticles including surface plasmon resonance. Graphical Abstract

Among the different types of multiferroic compounds, bismuth ferrite (BiFeO 3 ; BFO) stands out because it is perhaps the only one being simultaneously magnetic and strongly ferroelectric at room temperature. Therefore, in the past decade or more, extensive research has been devoted to BFO-based materials in a variety of different forms, including ceramic bulks, thin films and nanostructures. Ceramic bulk BFO and their solid solutions with other oxide perovskite compounds show excellent ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties and are thus promising candidates for lead-free ferroelectric and piezoelectric devices. BFO thin films, on the other hand, exhibit versatile structures and many intriguing properties, particularly the robust ferroelectricity, the inherent magnetoelectric coupling, and the emerging photovoltaic effects. BFO-based nanostructures are of great interest owing to their size effect-induced structural modification and enhancement in various functional behaviors, such as magnetic and photocatalytic properties.
