Nanoparticulate Pt on mesoporous SBA-15 doped with extremely low amount of W as a highly selective catalyst for glycerol hydrogenolysis to 1,3-propanediol

Abstract: A Pt/W–SBA-15 catalyst with an extremely low W/Si atomic ratio of 1/640 affords 1,3-PDO with high selectivity and yield in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol.

“…Therefore, the selective hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3‐PDO is highly desirable yet more challenging. Driven by the great potential for practical applications, this reaction has been intensively studied . So far, it has been established that a noble metal in combination with an oxophilic metal oxide, typically like Ir−ReO x, Rh−ReO x and Pt−WO x , is effective for the formation of 1,3‐PDO.…”

“…Therefore, several catalytic systems were designed and tested under mild hydrothermal conditions, with selectivity values of around 60% associated with low conversions. In the literature, higher yields were found for Pt-WO x supported over Al derivatives, exhibiting values of 66-69% and 62%, reported by Kaneda et al in 2013 [148] and Zong et al in 2017 [168], respectively. Different strategies can be applied to overcome the lack of activity of Pt-W systems at the cost of selectivity, from the incorporation of other elements in the catalyst to external additives such as NaOH to achieve higher conversion rates.…”

“…Zong and co‐workers reported that the Pt/W‐SBA‐15 catalyst with low W/Si ratios exhibited good performances in the hydrogenolysis of glycerol to 1,3‐PDO, that is, the Pt/W‐SBA‐15 catalyst with the W/Si ratio as low as 1 : 640 gave rise to the highest 1,3‐PDO selectivity of 70.8 % at high glycerol conversion of 86.8 % under 4 MPa H 2 at 423 K for 30 h [44] . With the UV‐Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) experiment (shown in Figure 1), two new absorbance bands centered at 211 and 267 nm were found in the spectrum of Pt/W‐SBA‐15 catalysts on the basis of the spectrum of Pt/SBA‐15.…”
