Nanoparticles of cerium dioxide – an effective antiviral agent and adjuvant of biologically active molecules

Show more

“…Since the pioneering work of Zholobak et al [ 116 ], demonstrating the antiviral ability of polymer-coated ceria nanoparticles, the antiviral/virucide properties of nanoceria have been studied intensively. Cerium oxide nanoparticles have been demonstrated to protect against the Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) in the RF cell line [ 117 ], and vesicular stomatitis Indiana virus (VSV) in L929 [ 116 , 117 ], EPT [ 116 ] and ST [ 118 ] cell lines. The activity of biogenic CeO 2 nanoparticles against the Sabin-like poliovirus has been reported recently [ 119 ].…”

“…For example, the conjugation of noble metal NPs (Ag and Au) with the antiviral peptide FluPep was reported to enhance the inhibition of the Influenza virus compared to the peptide alone, which may be related to the high grafting density of the FluPep ligand on the surface of the NPs [33]. Cerium oxide (CeO 2 ) NPs were reported in link with Vesicular stomatitis virus [34] and in association with interferon to allow its prolonged effect in the treatment of Herpes [35]. Other particulate systems were also investigated.…”

“…It is also well known that cerium oxide nanoparticles mimic the activity of endogenous enzymes such as superoxide dismutase (SOD) [17][18][19] and catalase [20]. Cerium oxide nanoparticles are considered as a promising anticancer [21][22][23], antibacterial [24][25][26] and antiviral [27][28][29] agent as well as a promising inorganic antioxidant for diverse biomedical applications [30][31][32].…”
