Nanoparticles Improve Biological Functions of Phthalocyanine Photosensitizers Used for Photodynamic Therapy

Abstract: Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new technology using photodynamic effect for disease diagnosis and treatment. It is a two-step technique involving the uptake of a photosensitizer by cancer tissue followed by light irradiation that excites the photosensitizer to produce highly reactive oxygen species, the latter execute apoptosis of cancerous cells. As a second-generation of photosensitizers, phthalocyanine demonstrates higher absorption in the 650-800 nm range and short tissue accumulation compared to their fi… Show more

“…One rising field in this regard is the use of multifunctional nanoparticulate carrier systems, which enable the loading of a photosensitizer together with other components that enhance the specificity and imaging qualities of the carriers [8][9][10]. These features make a combination of diagnostic imaging, drug delivery and therapy [11][12][13][14] feasible.…”

“…It is estimated that 15 million people will suffer from cancer until 2020 [229][230][231][232]. Many strategies have been developed for cancer treatment: immunotherapy, thermal therapy, phototherapy [233,234], surgery, gene therapy, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. Each of these methods has its own advantages and disadvantages [235].…”

“…The increased extension of the macrocyle, which is hydrophobic in nature, favors the formation of large aggregates in polar solvent and in some cases renders the compound practically insoluble in aqueous media. As a consequence their delivery to cells in vitro and in vivo is possible after inclusion in lipidbased formulations or nanovectors with a hydrophobic core [26][27][28][29][30].…”
