Panax ginseng (PG) has been commonly used as medicinal herb for the treatment of various diseases in Eastern Asia for thousands of years. This study was designed to investigate the protective effect of PG against paracetamol-(N-acetyl-p-aminophenol; APAP)-induced liver damage in rats. Thirty-two albino Wistar rats were divided into four groups: Group C (control); Group APAP (gavaged orally with APAP (APAP, 2 g/kg, single dose); Group PG 100 mg/kg + APAP or 200 mg/kg + APAP (these two groups were treated by gavaging with PG (100 or 200 mg/kg) for 30 days following a single dose of APAP). APAP treatment alone induced hepatotoxicity, evidenced by significant increases in malondialdehyde (MDA) level and serum activities of alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α). In addition, the level of GSH in the liver was significantly reduced, as were the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT). Liver histopathological examination showed that APAP administration induced centrilobular necrosis and infiltration of lymphocytes. However, these biochemical and histological changes were prevented by PG pretreatment. In conclusion, our results suggest that PG may be considered a protective medicinal herb against APAP-induced liver injury.

Natural herbs are moving from fringe to mainstream use with a increase number of population-seeking remedies and health approaches free from hazardous side effects caused by laboratory synthesize chemicals. Recently, focus has been given to utilize eco-friendly and bio-friendly natural-based products for the prevention and cure of diseases. It is documented that 80% of the world's population has belief in natural medicine, particularly plant-based drugs for their primary healthcare. Herbal drug generally introduce in the market in traditional dosage form but now different scientific approaches are being developed these days to deliver herbal medicines due to their poor rate of absorption and target specific approach. Novel drug delivery systems including nanoparticles have been developed for the effective delivery of herbal drugs. Nanoparticulate formulations such as liposomes, polymeric nanoparticles, microemulsions, proliposomes, and solid lipid nanoparticles present potential to deliver herbal medicines effectively. Because of nanotechnology, the use of herbal drug is greatly increased in recent years. In this article, we are try to elaborating the role of nanotechnology which increases the potential as well as sale of herbal drugs in global world.

Natural products have been used as a major source of drugs for millennia, and about half of the pharmaceuticals in use today are derived from natural products. However, their efficacy can be limited because of their low hydrophilicity and intrinsic dissolution rate(s), or physical/chemical instability. In addition, they can present scarce absorption, poor pharmacokinetics and bioavailability, scarce biodistribution, first-pass metabolism, trivial penetration and accumulation in the organs of the body, or low targeting efficacy. Novel nanoformulations based on drug delivery systems, namely nanoparticles, micelles, and vesicles, offer significant promise in overcoming these limitations. Nowadays, nanomedicine is crucial in developing appropriate therapeutic treatments of essential drugs, specifically antitumor and antiparasistic agents (i.e., Taxol, vincristine, camptothecin, doxorubicin, artemisinin) and other emerging molecules with pleiotropic functions (i.e., resveratrol, curcumin, salvianolic acid B, honokiol). Additionally, the number of nanoformulations developed with flavonoids, in particular rutin, quercetin, silymarin, and green tea catechins, is constantly increasing, and a significant number of publications have appeared in the last decade pertaining to nanoformulations based on extracts and essential oils. Most of these studies report very promising nanoformulations with sustained release and improved bioavailability at much lower doses than conventional preparations, and in many cases, also a better safety profile.
