Nanoparticles as energy donors and acceptors in bionanohybrid systems

Abstract: The bionanohybrids are the junctions of at least two objects of different origin: abiotic and biotic. The abiotic part is a nanoparticle (often a fluorescent quantum dot), the biotical one may be a protein (especially fluorescent one or redox-active one), nucleic acid, carbohydrate as well as a simple organic molecule. When such a junction undergoes illumination, the energy transfer between the partners is possible. The nanoparticles, depending on their characteristics, may be donors, acceptors or mediators of… Show more

“…Both these attributes of AuNPs lead to the enhancement of photocurrent generation in μPSC. [34,35,80,83,85,86] Therefore, the enhanced interface between intracellular nanostructures and biomachinery allows more efficient energy transfer from photoexcited Au NPs to the biochemical pathway. Most of all, Au NPs, as they are chemically inert and biocompatible (shown with viability studies) in the host photosynthetic microorganism, allow for extended longevity.…”

“…Colloidal quantum dots (QDs) are semiconductor nanocrystals known for their luminescence properties and the ability to transfer energy by resonance mechanisms as well as to donate photoinduced electrons to various acceptors or electrodes. QDs are usually quasispheres of a few nanometers in diameter. In this research, we used core-only QDs composed of CdTe.…”

“…In a recent review, we broadly described the involvement of nanoparticles, including QDs, in both ET and RET. 14 Cytochromes, which basically means cellular pigments, 15 are reddish proteins with heme as their prosthetic group. CytC, which is the subject of this paper, is a soluble protein involved in mitochondrial respiration.…”

“…For these reasons, QDs may potentially be applied in the construction of light-driven nanodevices for controlling cellular homeostasis. In a recent review, we broadly described the involvement of nanoparticles, including QDs, in both ET and RET …”
