Nanoparticle-Infused UHMWPE Layer as Multifunctional Coating for High-Performance PPTA Single Fibers

Abstract: High-performance fibers made of poly-( p -phenylene terephthalamide) (PPTA) with high stiffness and high strength are widely used in body armor for protection due to their high degree of molecular chain alignment along the fiber direction. However, their poor mechanical properties in the transverse direction and low surface friction are undesirable for applications requiring resistance to ballistic impact. Here we provide a simple yet effective surface engineering strategy to improve bot… Show more

“…The mechanical properties and friction and adhesion characteristics of fibrous tows were considered in establishing the fibrous tow mechanical model, in which Tðe; e 0 ; nÞ represents the external load applied to the fiber T e; e 0 ; n ð Þ¼ r e; e 0 ; n ð ÞA (38) where A is the fiber's cross-sectional area. The interaction between the fiber and the spool includes friction and adhesion, but with changing directions at different loading stages.…”

“…The friction between fibrous tows and other material surfaces was proposed, which is closely related to the effective contact area. [36][37][38] By determining the contact mechanism between fibrous tows and spools, the effective contact areas can be determined. Assuming that the contacting objects are rigid bodies and that there is no adhesion between the contact surfaces, the classical Hertz contact theory can be applied to accurately explain the contact mechanism between rigid bodies.…”

“…It far exceeds common commercial polymers in aspects such as tensile strength, modulus, toughness, and wear resistance. It plays an irreplaceable role as an important engineering and biological material , in artificial joints, battery diaphragms, etc. Because of their high strength and modulus qualities, UHMWPE fibers are employed in military, nautical, aerospace, and other significant applications. It is difficult to be processed by traditional flow processing methods due to the exceptionally high molecular weight and high viscosity after melting. Sintering processing is a method borrowed from powder metallurgy of refractory metals which avoids the problem of hard to flow of the melt. …”

“…Para aramid fibers, that is, poly( p -phenylene terephthamide) fibers, are well known for their high strength, high modulus, and high crystallinity. They have not only excellent mechanical properties but also outstanding thermal stability, chemical stability, heat resistance, and flame retardant ability. Para aramid fibers (commonly referred to as PPTA fibers) were first produced in 1972 and have since then been widely used in diverse areas such as military applications, aerospace industry, electrical engineering, and so on. ,, Because PPTA fibers are excellent materials for electrical insulation, they can easily generate and accumulate substantial static electricity that can damage electronic equipment and textiles during their use .…”
