Nanomedicine Strategies for Anti‐Inflammatory Treatment of Noninfectious Arthritis

Abstract: Noninfectious arthritis (NIA) comprises a class of chronic and progressive inflammatory disorders that require early-stage management to prevent disease progression. The most common forms include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, and gouty arthritis. Current treatments involve nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs and glucocorticoids to alleviate clinical symptoms, although regular use of these can result in a high risk of chronic kidney disease… Show more

“…The word glucocorticoid is a portmanteau from a combination of words glucose, cortex, and steroid, owing to its function in regulating glucose metabolism and synthesis in the zona fasciculate of the adrenal cortex, and is a class of steroid hormones . Glucocorticoids possess several promising activities such as anti-inflammation, antitoxic, antiallergic, antishock, and antipyretic . Glucocorticoids restrain the inflammatory response by regulating the stimulation of anti-inflammatory genes (transactivation) and reducing inflammatory factors (transrepression) simultaneously, promoting apoptosis of inflammatory cells .…”

“…Poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) nanoparticles (NPs) can be used as an effective drug carrier with high encapsulation efficiency, the excellent biocompatibility and stable release performance, therefore improving the bioavailability, solubility and stability of the drugs [ [9] , [10] , [11] ]. In the present study, RSV was incorporated into PLGA, and RSV-PLGA NPs were prepared.…”

“…Recently, nanomaterials have been delicately designed and constructed for highly efficient theranostics of RA and other chronic diseases. In particular, inherent scavenging properties of specific nanomaterials have the potential to revolutionize therapeutic approaches to RA. , Nanozymes, referring to nanomaterials with enzyme-mimicking capability, have been adopted as ROS scavengers for the anti-inflammation treatment of RA. Despite the favorable efficiency reported in previous studies, , the ROS scavenging capability of nanozymes might be insufficient to inhibit the OCs activation and potential bone destruction. Alternatively, nanozymes can be incorporated with other functional components to construct nanoplatforms for more efficient and precise theranostics of RA .…”
