Nanomaterial-based CT contrast agents and their applications in image-guided therapy

Abstract: Computed tomography (CT), a diagnostic tool with clinical application, comprehensive coverage, and low cost, is used in hospitals worldwide. However, CT imaging fails to distinguish soft tissues from normal organs and tumors because their mass attenuation coefficients are similar. Various CT contrast agents have been developed in recent years to improve the sensitivity and contrast of imaging. Here, we review the progress of nanomaterial-based CT contrast agents and their applications in image-guided therapy. … Show more

“…Barium suspensions and iodinated small molecules are approved as clinical contrast agents for CT . Nanoparticles have become increasingly popular as CT contrast agents over the past seven years. , In contrast to small-molecule CT contrast agents, nanoparticles can be used for tracking cells and targeted imaging applications. , They have several advantages over small-molecule contrast agents, including long blood-pool residence times. Due to their inertness, nontoxicity, easy synthesis, and strong CT contrast, gold nanoparticles have been proposed as CT contrast agents .…”

“…[ 52,63,64 ] The merits and demerits of different antibacterial methods are briefly summarized in Table 2 . [ 23b,70 ] To date, multimodal antibacterial therapies employing combinations of antibiotic treatment, photodynamic therapy, gas therapy, etc., have been performed. In addition, multimodal imaging capabilities have been integrated into a multimodal antibacterial platform to visualize the site of infection or the course of treatment.…”
