Nanoflower‐Like Bi2WO6 Encapsulated in ORMOSIL as a Novel Photocatalytic Antifouling and Foul‐Release Coating

Abstract: Herein, the first multi-purpose antifouling and foul-release photocatalytic coating based on ORMOSIL thin films doped with nanoflower-like Bi2 WO6 is described. Irradiation with visible light of the new films immersed in water produces significant amounts of H2 O2 by photocatalytic oxidation of water, and allows the degradation of (bio)organic pollutants at the outer surface of the xerogel film.

“…Bismuth tungstate (Bi 2 WO 6 ) is one of the simplest members of the Aurivillius oxides with a special layer structure. Bi 2 WO 6 with a narrow band gap has been confirmed to present excellent VLD photocatalytic performance in water splitting and organic pollutant degradation reactions . However, the rapid recombination of the electron–hole pairs seriously limits its application in photocatalytic reactions, and Bi 2 WO 6 exhibits photoabsorption properties from UV light to visible light with wavelengths shorter than approximately 450 nm .…”

“…Finally, another solar technology suitable to promote environmental remediation and economic growth is the nanostructured antifouling paint AquaSun developed with scholars at the Masdar Institute of Science and Technology (now Khalifa University of Science and Technology) . Encompassing the excellent fouling‐release properties of economically and environmentally friendly xerogel coatings as well as their ability to cure at room temperature and easily bind to all type of surfaces, the new solar coating immersed in water once hit by visible light produces significant amounts of native H 2 O 2 , which prevents the adhesion of foulants (Figure ).…”

“…Serious impacts of biofouling have been extensively reported, for example accelerated corrosion [2], and having significant economic loss [3]. Many antifouling strategies have been developed in recent decades and construction of a surface coating containing biocides is the most effective method [4][5][6]. However, the release of biocides is dangerous for other marine organisms, triggering worldwide concerns.…”
