Nanoemulsion Containing Kojic Dipalmitate and Rosehip Oil: A Promising Formulation to Treat Melasma

Abstract: Melasma is a hard-to-treat hyperpigmentation disorder. Combined incorporation of kojic dipalmitate (KDP), the esterified form of kojic acid, and rosehip oil, an oil with antioxidant and skin-regenerating properties, into nanocarrier systems appears to be a suitable strategy to develop high-performance formulations. A high-energy method (Ultra-Turrax®) was used to develop nanoemulsions containing up to 2 mg/mL KDP, 5% rosehip oil, and 7.5% surfactant. Formulations were characterized regarding droplet size, size… Show more

“…However, this aspect did not influence the accumulation of both products in the epidermis (1.2 μg/cm 2 ). Also, both formulations prove to be safe as no decrease in fibroblast cell viability has been observed ( Zilles et al, 2023 ). The current investigation which designed nanoemulsions with droplet sizes of around 100 nm, may be able to permeate the skin ( Contri et al, 2016a ), particularly in cases of stratum corneum damage.…”

“…The main advantages of kojic dipalmitate over kojic acid would be its photostability, thermal stability, and stability at a wide range of pH in various topical formulations. However, due to the crystallinity nature, high lipophilicity, and low water solubility of kojic dipalmitate, its incorporations within the topical formulations would be more challenging ( Zilles et al, 2023 ). Based on the previous studies, a combination of topical kojic acid and hydroquinone would be a promising depigmenting agent regimen.…”

“…Kojic Acid Dipalmitate is one of the active ingredients that has been formulated in a nanoemulsion preparation using the high-energy method, employing the Ultra-Turax [126]. The study suggests that nanoemulsions serve as effective carriers, enhancing both the stability [148] and activity [72] of KDP on the skin.…”
