Nanodiamond-based Nanolubricants: Experiment and Modeling

Abstract: Our recent efforts using primarily nanodiamonds as lubricant additives are discussed. For traditional high performance engine oils, our results show a reduction in friction for steel surfaces for both laboratory experiments under controlled conditions and in a pilot study of passenger cars under typical driving conditions. Examination of the surfaces suggests that surface polishing at the sub-micron scale may be responsible for these results. A separate set of experiments using a quartz crystal microbalance to… Show more

“…Diamond has long been used as a polishing agent, particularly in the metallographic analysis field due to its high wear resistance and hardness. The strong diamond core therefore makes NDs a valuable lubricant additive, and numerous studies have shown improvements in tribological properties, both in reduction of overall wear and friction [15,[30][31][32][33]. Moreover, the reduction in friction associated with the fine polishing provided by NDs has been shown to promote an increase in fuel efficiency for both diesel and gasoline based vehicles.…”
