Nanocrystalline γ-Al2O3 thin film deposited by magnetron sputtering (MS) at low temperature

Abstract: This article presents some experimental data indicating the possibility of depositing nanocrystalline c-Al 2 O 3 thin films on 304L stainless steel, at low temperatures, using magnetron sputtering (MS) in a reactive atmosphere (O 2 ). The experimental conditions are defined, while the coat layer is characterized and first results on its wear behavior are presented.Alumina (Al 2 O 3 ) is one of the most important coating materials used in a wide range of applications due to its excellent mechanical and other ph… Show more

“…In our case, with such dimensions of crystallites in the range of several nanometres, the Hall-Petch effect might be one of the factors increasing the hardness of AZO. Furthermore, the hardness of Al 2 O 3 thin films can reach 15–20 GPa [ 52 , 53 ]. Therefore, the presence of Al 2 O 3 phase in our AZO coatings may influence and increase their overall hardness.…”

“…Figure 6 a shows that the nanocrystalline aluminised layer prepared by the double glow discharge technique can offer crystal nuclei for the formation of α-Al 2 O 3 and increase the nucleation density. 24 Meanwhile, it is conducive for the diffusion of Al and O through a mass of grain boundary provided by the nanocrystals. Figure 6 b shows a clear distinction between the transition layer and substrate owing to the difference in lattice structures.…”

“…Although these methods can play a protective role, its defect is also very obvious. For example, in thermal spray, the high temperature heat source, such as electric arc, flame, plasma, is easy to make a fair degree of phase transformation, oxidation and grain growth phenomenon, leading to the high porosity, high oxygen content, high heat stress and other defects [1,2]. Therefore, it is necessary to find new methods and techniques to prepare reliable and convenient high performance coating on the offshore platform, drill and the online production storage.…”
