Nanocontainer‐Based Anticorrosive Coatings: Effect of the Container Size on the Self‐Healing Performance

Abstract: Organic coatings based on inhibitor loaded inorganic containers for smart corrosion inhibition are presented. The overall coating performance is strongly infl uenced by the containers as well as their inhibitor capacity, compatibility with the coating matrix, and size. The important effect of container size is described for the fi rst time in this work by investigating two types of mesoporous silica containers of different diameters: 80 and 700 nm. The coating physical properties (thickness and adhesion) are c… Show more

“…Thus, these PILs are not suitable to be applied in acidic media, as they are not easily adsorbed due to ionic competition, which leads to the formation of a non-uniform corrosion inhibitor film on the aluminum alloy surface. In another study, by Ayman et al [54,55] PIL based on 2-acrylamido-2 methylpropane sulfonic acid, showed an excellent corrosion inhibition performance for steel in 1 M HCl medium. The adsorption of IL on steel surface blocked the active centers, which lowered the corrosion rate of steel.…”

“…135 Therefore, instead of repairing surface hydrophobicity or bulk integrity, the self-healing regime in this case takes effect by the autonomous inhibition of corrosion reactions. Besides direct doping, [136][137][138] corrosion inhibitors were more frequently stored in micro/nanocapsules [139][140][141][142][143] and fibers 144 and then mixed in coating matrix for more efficient or pH-responsive releases. A list of excellent articles can be referred to for the reviews of inhibitor-containing self-healing anticorrosive coatings.…”

“…It is known that an incorporation of even the smallest objects (such as oil droplets or inhibitor powder) into the coating can often lead to the decrease of its barrier properties [29]. On the contrary, the distribution of an inhibitor on the molecular level (under precondition of the absence of side chemical reactions with other coating components) does not disturb the integrity of a coating.…”
