Nanocellulose as a Vehicle for Drug Delivery and Efficiency of Anticancer Activity: A Short-Review

Abstract: With the high demand of using nanotechnology, nanocellulose has become popular for different biomedical and anticancer applications. Cellulose, a nature gifted material and the most abundant organic polymer on earth, is systematically reviewed. Details of the mechanical and chemical structure of nanocellulose are explained, starting with preparation methods along with physiochemical properties and pH gradient to incorporate innovative polymeric drug delivery vehicles in anticancer applications. A myriad of res… Show more

“…15 In addition, nanocellulose was already successfully used in oral, ocular, intratumoural and topical drug delivery. [90][91][92] Ooi et al 93 in 2016 prepared gelatinous hydrogels enforced with nanocellulose addition, acquired through chemical cross-linking. The additive caused a significant improvement in the dynamic mechanical properties and crystallinity of the composite.…”

“…Figure 14(b) represents the applications of NCs in drug delivery with examples such as wound dressings and microneedles, which are advanced drug delivery methods. NCs is utilized for several drug delivery systems such as transdermal, oral, ocular, intratumoral, and topical drug delivery [486][487][488]. Ooi et al [489] prepared gelatin hydrogels reinforced with CNC by chemical crosslinking.…”

“…Nano-sized medicines may favorably enhance circulation time, targeted activities, and safe drug delivery to decrease the issues of side effects from the chemotherapy treatments [ 22 , 23 , 24 ]. For this aim, biopolymer-based NPs may ideally avoid the immune system to increase circulation time of the NPs in blood to enhance the anticancer actions [ 25 ].…”
