Nanobiotechnology: Applications in Chronic Wound Healing

Abstract: Wounds occur when skin integrity is broken and the skin is damaged. With progressive changes in the disease spectrum, the acute wounds caused by mechanical trauma have been become less common, while chronic wounds triggered with aging, diabetes and infection have become more frequent. Chronic wounds now affect more than 6 million people in the United States, amounting to 10 billion dollars in annual expenditure. However, the treatment of chronic wounds is associated with numerous challenges. Traditional remedi… Show more

“…Recently, smart wound dressings that integrate wearable sensors and drug delivery systems have been introduced for wound healing applications. 14,15 UCNPs can be tailored to emit specific wavelengths, intensities, and stability, enabling customization for different wound healing requirements. Surface modifications can be employed to enhance their functionalization, such as incorporating antibacterial agents or drug payloads.…”

“…Os métodos tradicionais para tratar esta patologia consistem na administração de medicamentos locais ou sistêmicos, no entanto possuem baixa solubilidade e bioatividade. O desenvolvimento de nanopartículas alavanca o sistema de entrega dos fármacos podendo fornecer efeitos terapêuticos aprimorados, além do que sua liberação é controlada, possui uma melhora da aderência no local reduzindo as aplicações durante os dias e os custos do tratamento (JIANG et al, 2022).…”

“…In addition, as a growth factor that promotes periodontal and fracture healing [ 26 , 27 ], IGF-2 is involved in the repair process of tissue injuries. During the development of skin wound healing, keratinocytes synthesize IGF-2 to promote tissue repair in an autocrine or paracrine manner [ 28 , 29 ]. The IGF-2 precursor encoded by the IGF-2 gene is a single-chain polypeptide consisting of an amino-terminal signal peptide (24 amino acids) and a carboxyl-terminal E domain (89 amino acids).…”
