Nano-Sized Iron Sulfide: Structure, Synthesis, Properties, and Biomedical Applications

Abstract: Nano-sized iron sulfides have attracted intense research interest due to the variety of their types, structures, and physicochemical properties. In particular, nano-sized iron sulfides exhibit enzyme-like activity by mimicking natural enzymes that depend on an iron-sulfur cluster as cofactor, extending their potential for applications in biomedicine. The present review principally summarizes the synthesis, properties and applications in biomedical fields, demonstrating that nano-sized iron sulfides have consid… Show more

“…[3,15b,28] The strong peaks at 2θ = 30.06°, 34.03°, 44.08°, 53.38°and 73.92°correspond to the (100), (101), (102), (110) and (104) planes are all indexed to Fe 0.95 S 1.05 (JCPDS card No.75-0600). [29] The characteristic peaks of WS 2 and Fe 0.95 S 1.05 can be observed in Figure 1a, confirming that the product is a phase mixture. The Raman spectra of WS 2 / Fe 0.95 S 1.05 -2 and WS 2 were compared and shown in Figure 1b.…”

“…More recently, other nanostructured metal sulfides with unique physical and chemical properties and promising photodynamic response for cancer treatment have been reported. Among them, iron sulfide [ 78 ], silver sulfide [ 79 , 80 ], bismuth sulfide [ 81 , 82 ], and cobalt sulfide [ 83 ] stand out. Iron sulfide comprises iron and sulfur at different proportions and exists in different phases, such as Fe 1− x S (pyrrhotite), FeS (mackinawite), FeS 2p (pyrite), Fe 3 S 4 (greigite), Fe 9 S 11 (smythite), and FeS 2m (marcasite) [ 78 ].…”

The phase, shape, and physicochemical properties of iron sulfide nanoparticles depend primarily on the iron content [ 78 ].…”

“…They are typically found in anoxic sediments [62–64] . Iron sulfide minerals can be produced by pure chemical reactions and include greigite (Fe 3 S 4 ), pyrrhotite (Fe 7 S 8 ), mackinawite (tetragonal FeS), pyrite (cubic FeS 2 ), marcasite (orthorhombic FeS 2 ), and amorphous FeS [55,65] . Compared to these abiotic iron sulfides, those formed by SRB and anaerobic archaea are limited to amorphous FeS, mackinawite, greigite and rarely pyrite [37,66,67] …”
