Nano biomaterials based strategies for enhanced brain targeting in the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases: an up-to-date perspective

Dur E Nayab,
Fakhar ud Din,
Hussain Ali
et al.

Abstract: Neurons and their connecting axons gradually degenerate in neurodegenerative diseases (NDs), leading to dysfunctionality of the neuronal cells and eventually their death. Drug delivery for the treatment of effected nervous system is notoriously complicated because of the presence of natural barriers, i.e., the blood-brain barrier and the blood cerebrospinal fluid barrier. Palliative care is currently the standard care for many diseases. Therefore, treatment programs that target the disease’s origin rather than… Show more

“…Currently, though, there have been more than 200 protein therapies that have overcome such hurdles and have been approved by the FDA for wide-ranging therapeutic applications, with many more on the path toward such an approval and implementation [6]. These therapies depend on the ability of a drug delivery system to deliver proteins efficiently and precisely to the targeted site within the body [7,8] by navigating the complex biological pathways of the human body and selectively targeting diseased tissues while sparing healthy ones [9][10][11][12]. This task demands precision engineering and an Micromachines 2024, 15, 533 2 of 21 intimate knowledge of physiological interactions, making it a focal point in current research and developments in the field.…”
