SUMMARY We propose a new method for tiered storage and evaluate its characteristics. In this method, the fast tier is divided into two areas and the data in each area are managed on the basis of two I/O (input/output) measurement periods. When I/Os to these areas increase, the proposed method allocates the frequently accessed areas to a fast tier in advance, thereby improving storage I/O performance. We evaluate the proposed method by simulating storage I/Os and data migration between tiers. When I/O locality is high or frequently accessed areas rarely move, the proposed method is more effective and improves storage I/O performance by up to 44%.

Summary Solid state drives (SSDs) built upon MLC NAND flash memories suffer from a low lifetime endurance induced by continuously scaling‐down feature sizes and increasing bit density per cell. To cost‐effectively address this problem, we propose to integrate both hierarchical data redundancy and heterogeneous flash memory techniques into the SSD, named H2‐SSD. Through deploying across‐chips data redundancy in addition to conventional in‐page error correction codes, error correction capacity, so does the lifetime endurance of H2‐SSD can be dramatically improved. Furthermore, an extra small‐size sisngle‐level cell (SLC) chip is integrated into H2‐SSD to store across‐chips parities. Due to the high program/erase performance and lifetime endurance of that SLC chip, I/O performance degradation induced by the hierarchical data redundancy can be significantly mitigated, even under strict synchronous parity update strategies. Quantitative analysis and trace‐driven simulations are conducted to evaluate the effectiveness and efficiency of H2‐SSD, in both the scenes with and without degraded reads. Experimental results demonstrate that H2‐SSD outperform the conventional SSD in maximum Program/Erase cycles by 23% to 178%, and suffer from negligible degradation of I/O performance in terms of both throughput and average response time in most cases.

Storage devices have been getting more and more diverse during the last decade. The advent of SSDs made it painfully clear that rotating devices, such as HDDs or magnetic tapes, were lacking in regards to response time. However, SSDs currently have a limited number of write cycles and a significantly larger price per capacity, which has prevented rotational technologies from begin abandoned. Additionally, Non-Volatile Memories (NVMs) have been lately gaining traction, offering devices that typically outperform NAND-based SSDs but exhibit a full new set of idiosyncrasies.Therefore, in order to appropriately support this diversity, intelligent mechanisms will be needed in the near-future to balance the benefits and drawbacks of each storage technology available to a system. In this paper, we present a first step towards such a mechanism called HetFS, an extension to the ZFS file system that is capable of choosing the storage device a file should be kept in according to preprogrammed filters. We introduce the prototype and show some preliminary results of the effects obtained when placing specific files into different devices.
