Abstract: Our results suggest that nailfold capillary morphology is altered in patients with PAPS, but these changes could not be correlated to impairment of functional parameters.

“…Chronic illnesses such as systemic lupus erythematosus, scleroderma [48], systemic sclerosis [49], antiphospholipid syndrome [50], connective tissue disease [51], diabetes mellitus [52] and Raynaud's Phenomenon [49] have been readily identified via specific physiological markers at the capillary level such as increased vessel permeability (haemorrhaging) [2,3], the presence of avascular areas, enlarged loops, poor circulation, and increased tortuosity [29]. In addition, the identification of such ailments has not been limited to solely systemic diseases.…”

“…Further evidence of vessel wall abnormalities comes from a higher prevalence of renal artery stenosis in aPL-positive patients with SLE [22]. Nailfold video capillaroscopy in patients with primary APS showed abnormal morphology with smaller capillary diameters than controls, although these changes could not be correlated with impairment of functional parameters [24]. Even at the capillary level there may be abnormalities.…”
