Nail fold capillaroscopy findings in patients with primary fibromyalgia

Abstract: The nail fold capillary morphology and blood flow were examined by capillaroscopy in 10 patients with primary fibromyalgia. Only slight morphological anomalies such as moderate enlargement of capillary loops and variations in calibre were found. No obvious correlation emerged between capillary morphology and the duration of the disease, smoking, or history of Raynaud's phenomenon. Three patients with a history of Raynaud's phenomenon showed sluggish capillary flow correlated with subnormal skin temperature dur… Show more

“…Our findings were in contrast with earlier smaller studies, suggesting evidence of microcirculatory dysfunction in FMS [ 6 9 , 12 ]. The present study benefits from being comparatively much larger than previous work and from having evaluated an enriched cohort of FMS patients specifically referred for objective assessment of RP symptoms.…”

“…Recent studies have reported a high frequency of RP symptoms (18.2–53.3 %) in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) [ 3 6 ]. Structural and functional microvascular disturbance has been reported in FMS compared with healthy controls [ 6 9 ]. To date, no studies have compared and contrasted RP symptom characteristics and outcome of microvascular imaging studies in FMS (reporting RP symptoms) and primary RP.…”

“…Similarly, Morf et al,[ 6 ] in 10 patients with primary fibromyalgia, observed a significantly lower capillary number, more capillary dilatations, and irregular formations compared to healthy controls. Analogous are also the observations of Frödin et al,[ 7 ] who found no hemorrhages or avascular areas in 10 patients with primary fibromyalgia. Based on qualitative analysis of the capillaroscopic images, non-specific findings were detected, i.e., moderate enlargement of capillary loops, slight variations in caliber, and slight tortuosity.…”

“…These patients present with Raynaud's phenomenon and intolerance to cold [2]. Frodin and colleagues, using nailfold capillaroscopy in FM patients, found slight morphological changes, such as moderate enlargement of capillary loops and variations in calibre [3]. Jeschonneck and colleagues showed decreased microcirculatory blood flow above tender points in FM patients [4].…”
